The name “Digital Mermaid” was coined by the founder, Tomoe Kobayashi, inspired by the term “Digital Centaur” that appears in Masahiro Watanabe’s book “Jobs That Will Feed You in 10 Years, Jobs That Won’t: How Occupations Will Change with AI and Robotization.”
In Watanabe’s book, Digital Centaurs are said to be professionals who harness AI technology, utilize advanced intelligence, sensibility, and language skills that only humans possess, and perform exclusive tasks such as doctors and lawyers. On the other hand, executive assistants, virtual assistants, chiefs of staff, and clerical jobs are considered to have a high possibility of being replaced by AI and robotization, and are expected to disappear in the future.
However, Tomoe Kobayashi believes that executive assistants, virtual assistants, chiefs of staff, and clerical jobs will continue to remain while evolving and transforming. Just as typewriters have changed to word processors and then to computers, executive assistants, virtual assistants, chiefs of staff, and clerical jobs will continue to evolve and transform by incorporating different technologies at each stage.
In fact, out of the 271 occupations listed in the 1950 U.S. Internal Revenue Service’s occupational list, only elevator operators have disappeared. Occupations themselves surprisingly do not disappear easily.
Also, if we examine Greek mythology, the centaur (horse-man) used as an example by Watanabe is a symbol of high combat power, aggressiveness, ferocity, and the power to drive out others, accompanied by images of conflict and victory.
In contrast, the reason we chose the mermaid is that in the myths, fairy tales, and legends about mermaids left in various places, they are considered messengers of peace and prosperity. Mermaids are attractive, curious, use magic, mysterious, maintain a connection with nature, and possess flexibility as shapeshifters. Above all, in Japan, an island nation surrounded by the sea and rich in beautiful rivers and lakes, there are many legends of mermaids in the sea, rivers, and lakes.
In the future where AI and robotization progress, we want to depict an image of richness and peace like the world of Rachel Carson’s “Sense of Wonder,” which celebrates the mystery of marine life, rather than an image of a desolate battle where we compete with each other. That is the reason for using Digital Mermaid instead of Digital Centaur, and Tomoe Kobayashi believes that executive assistants, virtual assistants, chiefs of staff, and clerical jobs will continue to play an important role for that purpose.

Evoking the “female” gender image of mermaids may be controversial, but please consider it a strategic choice as a kind of antithesis to the strong “male” gender image evoked by centaurs.
